Tokyo Disney Resort is a Disney theme park and resort consisting of Tokyo Disneyland, Tokyo Disney Sea,Ikspiari (Tokyo’s counterpart of Disneyland’s Downtown Disney and Disney World’s Disney Springs), Bon Voyage (Official Disney merchandise store), and multiple hotels (Disney branded and official hotels). Located in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan which is to the east of Tokyo, received about 16,540,000 guests in 2016 and reported a ¥74 billion ($677 million) in annual revenue for 2016. Despite an attendance drop within the past 2-3 years, the revenue consistently rises due a higher spending number per guest. The demographics show most of the guests who join in on the fun are those within 18-39 years of age and they make up 49.6% of the number.

It is one of the parks along side Hong Kong Disneyland where it’s not fully owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company as it’s owned by The Oriental Land Company. It is a Japanese leisure and tourism corporation which focuses on three different“departments”; theme park, hotel business, and other business. Like Tokyo Disney Resort, The Oriental Land Company’s corporation headquarters is also located in Urayasu, Chiba, Japan.

As of right now, I could not find a mission statement, however, I did find a primary goal statement stated by, the former president of The Oriental Land Company, Masatomo Takahashi, “We must not just repeat what we receive from Disney. I am convinced that we must contribute to the cultural exchange between Japan and U.S.A.”

Within the theme park and entertainment industries, Tokyo Disney Resort does keep up with the technological advances from theme parks owned by the Walt Disney Company to keep the experience magical which factors into Tokyo Disney Resort’s perceived value that guests look forward to.

From extremely adorable character themed food products to unique (like changing what the characters wear, what performers wear for shows and parades, just designing in general), I’ve noticed two unique creations from Tokyo Disney Resort.

The first one being the“tsum tsum” (translates to stack stack) which are quite popular in the US. In 2013, originally started off as a mobile game app where it’s similar to tetris where the player would stack up the characters. Eventually, a plush toy line was made and extremely popular as many guests are into collecting them.

The second creation which is more well-known in Japan and not so much in the US are the“Happy Villains” which first started in Halloween 2014~2015. It featured all new characters, 10 of them being recruited villains who are already assistants to the original villains (that their designs were based off of). For example, the Evil Queen’s assistant is Apple Poison, Queen of Hearts’ assistant is Jack Hearts, Claude Frollo’s assistant is Veil, and for Captain Hook’s assistant, it’sLady Pirate Hook. The show is actually extremely popular with many Tokyo Disney guests and often attracts crowds to watch and interact with them as they would with any other character.

With the two mentioned creations, I find it how interesting and unique they are and how it markets to the biggest age group (the mentioned 18-39 year old age group). As how the tsum tsums were brought over from Japan to the US, I would like to see something similar to the Happy Villains Recruiters brought over to the US since it would be fun and new for all guests to experience in Disneyland or Disney World. Although, it would make it not exclusive to Japan anymore.
