Musician Lucy Fresina will bring her sweet melodies to the market once again, and the Kid’s Corner will offer free activities and games for all ages. McDowell Cornhole sponsors a Cornhole Tournament every second and fourth Thursday in the lower parking lot; anyone can enter to win the grand prize.
Live Like Megan Foundation and McDowell DSS present the Back-to-School Emoji Bash today from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Camping World Pavilion, 348 Resistoflex Road. Foster/kinship families are invited for a day of food, fun and fellowship. There will be an obstacle course, games, face painting and door prizes. School supplies and clothes will be given out to children. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served.

The Bethlehem Community Cemetery Inc. will celebrate our loved ones with the decoration of graves. While the date is Sunday, Aug. 25, people can start putting flowers out a little earlier. Westmoreland Funeral home is graciously sharing a funeral tent. Organizer Bob Smith intends to be on-site on Friday, Aug. 23, from around 11 a.m. until 6, weather permitting, as well as from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, Aug. 24, and Sunday, Aug. 25, to assist and collect donations. Donations can also be mailed to Bethlehem Community Cemetery Inc., C/O Robert Smith, 656 Old Fort Sugar Hill Road, Old Fort, NC 28762.
The next plant-based potluck will be today, Aug. 24, from 6-8 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Marion Fellowship Hall. Join organizers for a meal and a short talk on how our diet affects our health. There will be a guest speaker Leticia Nichols, nurse practitioner. Bring a plant-based dish (no meats/egg/dairy) and a hearty appetite. Not sure what to bring? Just bring fruit. Paper products provided. Please bring a copy of your recipe to share with others. Interested folks can take a photo with their phones. There will be unsweetened tea. Water will be available as well. Feel free to bring another beverage if desired. This event is open to the community and is free of charge.

The Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League will hold a class called Feather Night Light with Catherine Bruggeman as the instructor. The class will be held Sunday, Aug. 25, from 1-4:30 p.m. The cost is $30 for A3L members, $40 for nonmembers, plus a $15 supply fee. Pretty feather night light in your choice of color palette. Please state your palette preference at time of registration such as warms or cools. Glass is precut, Students will clean, foil, flux and solder their piece and learn how to secure to brass nightlight hardware. The Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League will hold a class called Mountain Suncatcher with Catherine Bruggeman as the instructor. The class will be held Monday, Aug. 26, from 1-4:30 p.m. The cost is $32 for A3L members, $42 for nonmembers, plus a $15 supply fee. This simple yet striking version of our Blue Ridge Mountains is a permanent overlook. Glass is precut. Students will clean, foil, flux and solder their piece. WEDNESDAY, AUG. 28
The Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League will hold a class about eco-dyeing on silk-wearable art with Lori Greenberg as the instructor. The class will be held Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 1:30-4 p.m. The cost is $35 for A3L members, $45 for nonmembers, plus a $10 supply fee. Ability level is for beginners and beyond. Minimum of three students and maximum of five. Eco-dyeing is the art of using organic matter to create both design and color on natural fibers, such as silk, linen or cotton. Participants will be given the materials needed to create an eco-dyed silk scarf and are encouraged to bring any flowers or plants with them to explore the nature of the dye that lies within. Each participant will make one scarf. Greenberg is the founder of Aurora Studio & Gallery, an arts nonprofit for creatives who have lived experience with mental health needs or substance use. The Arrowhead Artists and Artisans League will hold a Brushes & Brew class with Lorelle Bacon. The class will be held Friday, Aug. 30, from 7-9 p.m. The cost is $40 for A3L members, $50 for nonmembers and includes all supplies. Come join the fun! Date night or girls night out, birthdays, etc. No painting experience is necessary. Bacon will guide you step by step and you will take home a painting you can be proud of. Participants will work in acrylics on canvas. Bring what you want to drink and be prepared to have lots of fun. Court St. Join participants to explore the history, future and goals of the commission and fascinating examples of historic landmarks in McDowell County. Bring your curiosity as participants delve into our county’s rich heritage and future preservation efforts.
